Why We’re Often Wrong About How the Enemy Works

March 10, 2022 by Abby McDonald

A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a friend who was going through an extremely difficult season. On top a crisis in her family life, she also faced stresses in her ministry. The timing of it could not have been worse. Each area of her life that mattered to her was filled with chaos of some sort. But what stuck me most about the conversation is that when the problems began mounting one of top of the other, she immediately recognized it as an attack from the enemy.

This person had walked with the Lord and fought spiritual battles long enough to see Satan’s schemes. This was his method, and one he’d used many times in the past. But instead of succumbing to it, she put on her armor, had friends surround her in prayer, and sought the Lord. She did not fall for the enemy’s deception, because she knew the One who was in her was greater than the one who sought to destroy her.

Often, I believe we fall for Satan’s schemes because we don’t recognize them for what they are. Instead, we focus on the distraction. We look at the troubles multiplying around us and try to control the situation instead of coming to the One who can actually help us. And this is exactly what our enemy wants.

Here are four reasons why we’re often wrong about how the enemy works:

1. He can’t read our minds.

Satan is not omniscient. He doesn’t know what you’re thinking or have the ability to, as the psalmist says, name a thought that’s on your tongue before you speak it. (Psalm 139) The way he operates is through slow observation. He has lots of demons carrying out his tasks, and his armies pay close attention to our actions over time. And friends, our actions speak volumes about what our weaknesses are. Through this careful examination, he’s able to present lies, temptations and scenarios that pinpoint our pressure points.

Let’s not give our enemy undue power by declaring that he’s gotten inside our head or “The devil made me do it!” Instead, let’s remember that we alone have the ability to control our thoughts. God has given us everything we need to declare victory over the devil, and he did not leave us to fight this battle alone. We get to say what goes in and what comes out, and the devil can’t take this power from us. Paul explained it this way:

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

Taking every thought captive is not a passive process but an active, moment-by- moment one. Doing this requires us to know the Word of God, and to apply it to our everyday lives.

2. He masquerades himself in light, not darkness.

One of the last things Satan says to Eve before she eats the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden is that “she will be like God.” (Genesis 3:5) At surface level, this promise would seem like a good thing. God is holy and perfect, so what could possibly be wrong with being more like God, right? But the bottom line is this: By listening to the serpent, Eve chose to trust him over God. Her actions were in direct disobedience to what God told her, and she fell for a lie masqueraded as truth.

Today, our enemy follows the same pattern. He doesn’t announce himself with a blaring trumpet, but often masquerades himself behind things that appear good. This deception may also include people, like false prophets. Even the early church had to arm themselves against his schemes.

“…for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, that his very servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.” 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 NIV

When faced with a lie or temptation that may appear good at surface level, some questions to ask ourselves are: Does this contradict a command or another truth I’ve read in God’s Word? Does following this path elevate myself above God? Does doing this make me feel anxious?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then stop and pray. Proceed with caution and talk to God about it until you have a clear answer. He is more than willing to give wisdom to those who ask.

3. He knows the Word of God, but twists its meaning.

Our enemy is not ignorant about the Word of God. After all, he is a fallen angel. This is one of the reasons we need to study the Word in its proper context and ask for the Spirit to help us in our understanding. Our world is filled with Instagram posts, sermons, and YouTube videos sharing messages that may seem biblical on the surface, but upon further examination, are not.

If we look at Jesus’ temptation by Satan in the desert, we see the importance of not only knowing the Word, but knowing God and his heart behind it. Satan first tries to appeal to Jesus’ physical need- his hunger. Jesus uses the Word in his denial of the temptation, so in Satan’s second attempt, he tries to get Jesus to pick up his deity and show his power. But this time, he also uses the Word, twisting it to try to manipulate Jesus.

“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Matthew 4:6 NIV

But Jesus knows the Word and the Father too well to fall for Satan’s schemes. He answers, “It is also written: ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Matthew 4:7)

Although none of us will ever know God or his Word better than Jesus, the good news is this: He sent us a Helper, the Holy Spirit. And when we’re in doubt about whether something is true, he will help us. He gives us discernment and is the voice in our ear, pointing us to the right or the left. (Isaiah 30:21)

4. He uses distraction more often than direct invitation.

One of our enemy’s main goals is to distract us from our purposes here on earth- to glorify God, enjoy him, and to help lead others to him. And we don’t have to look very far to see that distractions are endless. Some of these distractions may even seem good on surface level. How often do you ask people how they are doing and they say, “Busy?” We have become a culture that equates business with happiness and importance.

The problem is that all of these distractions draw our attention away from the One who matters. Our souls become weary and burnt out, but often we don’t even realize why. And when this happens, our enemy has achieved his goal. Our souls aren’t connected with God in the way they’re designed to be, we keep going about with our days as though everything is fine. Revelation speaks strongly about this type of double-mindedness and distraction:

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4 NIV

But you know what? It is never too late to begin again. God’s mercies are new each morning, and he desires nothing more than to have a relationship with us. We can come to him no matter have far we’ve roamed, and he is there waiting. Let’s not let our enemy distract us from the most important relationship in our life or keep us from fulfilling the purposes he has for us. It’s not worth it.

Friends, the lies of the enemy are too numerous to name, but we can be sure of this: He’s always telling them. Jesus called him the father of lies. (John 8:44) So, anything that comes out of his mouth is meant to steal, kill and destroy.

While it’s important to recognize his tactics, our best defense will always be to know the One who defeated him. Because he is greater, and he will lead us to victory. Let’s start there, today and every day.

An Invitation:

If you need to shift your focus from disappointment and worry and see what God is already doing in your life, I encourage you to pick of a copy of my book, Shift: Changing Our Focus to See the Presence of God. Many people have sent me messages saying it is a timely book for this season. This encourages my heart so much. I pray that God continues to use it to touch lives.

Here’s what one reader said:

“The message God spoke through Abby McDonald was answered prayer for me. I had been struggling through a hard season, really questioning God in some hard and deep ways. I was wrestling with where God had me in life. When I picked up, “Shift,” it is like His words flowed and He gave me the clarity I was looking for in the personal stories and testimonies Abby shared. Abby’s transparency to write down all God had been working in and through her reached a place in my heart that has transformed me. Your words in this post are so relevant and I believe in desperate need of application within the Christian community today. Your insights about our enemy (Satan) and how we can easily miss what he is doing in our lives, are both convicting and encouraging. It seems clear that Christians today (even more so than years past), need to be reminded of the many ways in which they’re (we’re) potentially buying into and living out a false gospel~ One that makes us feel good about ourselves rather than convicting us about who we really are, our depravity, and our desperate need for the one and only Savior, Jesus.

When information comes at you like a water hose, i When information comes at you like a water hose, it’s difficult to know what your next step is.

This is how the writing world often feels. Everyone has a different opinion about what you need to do next, how to get published and achieve your goals. And there are some amazing resources out there. Here’s the problem: They’re not personalized. No one knows your unique story but you, and the people you choose to share it with.

When I first started writing, I often felt overwhelmed by information. But over the years, I learned what works and what doesn’t. I learned how to stay authentic in a world where it can feel like everything’s already been said. I found my unique voice and discovered how to share it effectively. With time, experience, and my fair share of rejection, I landed a literary agent. Then, a traditional publishing contract.

I want to share what I learned with you.

If you’re a writer who wants to share your words but feels uncertain about your next step, I can help. Through coaching, we will help you identify what YOUR goals are, and how to help you achieve them. It all starts with finding your unique voice.

For a long season of life, I hung my identity on t For a long season of life, I hung my identity on the different hats I wore: wife, mother, friend, woman of faith. But when I felt like I was failing at any of these roles, my world would become unstable.

Over time, God showed me that knowing who I was started with knowing him in a more real, personal way. Not as a distant rule enforcer but as a friend who was there for me, especially when I felt the most vulnerable.

The more I learned about him, his love and unchanging character, the more I learned about my own identity. I saw that these different hats I wear are meant to enhance, but not define.

Sweet relief comes when I let “daughter” become my tried and true name.

Sometimes inspiration comes in moments I don’t e Sometimes inspiration comes in moments I don’t expect. (swipe left) But as I read about the Wright brothers defeats and discouragements yesterday, a sense of awe and wonder filled me. Two years after Wilbur confessed to his brother that he didn’t think men would fly for fifty years, they made their first successful flight. After hundreds of failures, they did what hadn’t been done.

When I see this type of tenacity, it makes my failures seem like stepping stones. It makes me want to keep trying, seeking and letting each experience propel me forward.

There is always more to the story. More than the p There is always more to the story. More than the portion we see in the square. More than what we see in the snippets of people’s lives they choose to share, whether in person or on a screen.

Take this verse in Philippians 4, for example. Up until several years ago, I didn’t know these words preceded the famous, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Little did I know, Paul was never talking about the things we often slap this verse on top of. He was talking about something beyond this life- the secret to everything, really.

Context matters, both in reading scripture and in the way we view the lives of those around us. And while we may never know the whole story behind our friend’s IG post, we can remember there is one. We can strive to embrace the secret Paul discovered. But here’s the key: It start with the death of the things we often think matter the most.

This truth may the be “IG worthy” or popular, but it can transform us from the inside out. It can make us stop reaching for a facade, and claim what’s already ours.

Can I get an amen?

Welcome to the next edition of Writing on Wednesda Welcome to the next edition of Writing on Wednesdays! Today we’re going to talk the one question you should ask yourself before you begin writing. When I started writing non-fiction eight years ago, my writing was all over the place. I wrote about anything and everything that popped into my head, as many writers do when they begin.

The problem with this is that while we may think we’re writing to everyone, we actually end up writing to no one. So what do we do? How can we make sure those who need our message the most will find it?

Before I sit down to write a piece, I ask myself, “What is the one thing I want my reader to know when she leaves my site?”

Doing this helps narrow all the hundreds of ideas I have swimming around my head. It focuses my thinking. It also improves my writing.

Asking this question will also lead to other questions, which focus on who your reader is. Some of these questions may include:

👉🏼What is she (or he) struggling with today?
👉🏼Where is she going?
👉🏼What is the one question she is asking herself?
👉🏼What are the problems that keep her awake at night?
👉🏼What is her family life like? Does she have a husband and kids?

Knowing who your audience is and what types of questions they’re asking will take your writing to another level. And while I used to think narrowing my focus would limit my writing, it actually expands it. Because instead of having to write to everyone and about everything, I can focus on the message that is important to me.

Your reader will likely be a version of yourself. It may be a younger version of you or perhaps an older, wiser one, but she will share many of your personal traits. Because we write what we know. We write what we’ve experienced and care about, and what we hope to encourage others with so they know they’re not alone.

So the next time you sit down, imagine your reader is sitting cross the table from you and the two of you are having coffee or tea. Think about the things you would talk about. Think about the questions she might ask you or the burden she would lay down because she has no one else to talk to.

Then, write. Write like you’re writing to her.

Do you ever feel like this guy? (He came up to the Do you ever feel like this guy? (He came up to the house to say hi today.) Like despite all your effort, hard work and tears you’re still moving at this pace?

Lord knows, I have. But here’s what God is teaching me: Slow and steady progress is much more sustainable than overnight success. With each hour I devote to the next project or task He’s given me, He teaches me. He prepares me.

The slow growth does a deeper, more lasting work. My roots grow deeper and are able to withstand the harsh seasons.

If you feel like your work is in vain today, friend, take your weary heart to the One who sees you today. He walked the road with the least of these and the overlooked, and He’ll renew you with the grace you need for the journey.

WRITING ON WEDNESDAYS Did you know that Walt Dis WRITING ON WEDNESDAYS

Did you know that Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City newspaper because he “lacked imagination” and “didn’t have any new ideas?” Of course, we know this rejection wasn’t the end of his story. He went on to inspire us, capture our childlike pursuit of joy, and create characters we still enjoy today. But what if he’d given up? What if he’d let that moment define him?

Rejection can feel like the end of the story, but it isn’t. It’s simply a turning point. It’s an invitation to say, “What works? How does this moment give me the opportunity to grow?”

When you face a rejection in writing, here are 3 things you can do:

1. Pitch it somewhere else. A rejection at one publisher or site doesn’t mean it will be a no somewhere else.
2. Tweak and refine. How can you continue to hone your craft? How can you consider any helpful feedback given?
3. Continue to plant seeds. Growing the trust of your readers and your readership base is a just as worthy of your attention as writing a book.

Whatever you do, keep writing. Keep creating. God will use your obedience to this calling in ways you may never expect.
