This is How We Stop Worrying (even if just for a moment)

August 9, 2018 by Abby McDonald

When I began my morning praying God’s Word, I didn’t foresee the news that would come later. I didn’t realize how much I would need to hold on to the promise woven into Philippians 4:6-7. But God knew.

As the verse came to me, the words didn’t seem to resonate within my peace-filled heart. I knew the words were true, but I wasn’t worried or anxious about anything. But I prayed the words anyway and went on with my normal routine.

Later that afternoon, my dad called. His usual pleasantries and questions about the grandkids were short this time. My mom was in the hospital. The symptoms pointed to a stroke, but the doctors were still unsure.

Hours of waiting and tests would ensue before we’d know anything. But here’s the thing- I’m not a waiter. I am a doer. When life unravels and reels out of control, I do anything within my power to fix the situation. And when the situation can’t be fixed, I worry. In my mind, I believe I’m exercising some sort of direction over circumstances I can’t possibly change.

My parents lived over 500 miles away. Even the desire to simply jump in my car and be present was not feasible at the time.

In the midst of my search for sense in the senseless, the words I prayed that morning came to me.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

I realized with stark clarity how God was preparing me for what was to come.

These verses gave clear instruction for what I was to do with my worry. I was to give it to God.

With a new sense of direction, I prayed for my mom and my family. I prayed for the doctors who were working to find a diagnosis and the staff caring for her. I thanked God for getting my mom to the hospital safely and for the availability of the care she needed. I thanked Him for giving the living Word I needed.

As I prayed, my doer nature realized I was doing something. Although I still had no control over the situation, I was bringing it before the One who did.

And that was the very best “doing.”

An unspeakable peace came over me and just as the Scripture states, I didn’t understand it. But I was so grateful for it. His instruction and promise carried me until we were able to get some answers.

Hours later, my dad called saying my mom was going to be okay. As suspected, she had experienced a stroke, but with physical and occupational therapy the doctors expected her to regain much of her previous functionality. Weeks later, I came home for Christmas and listened as she played Christmas hymns on the piano. I was amazed. Not only had God given me peace when I needed it, but He had answered our prayers in a way I didn’t anticipate.

When we carry the Word of God in our hearts, it becomes a weapon against worry and anxiousness.

Things beyond our control will happen in our day-to-day lives, but we can equip ourselves with the Truth that protects our hearts and minds. When we do this, the words become like a soothing balm for our anxious souls.

Confidence replaces doubt and peace replaces worry. We find sweet rest because instead of relying on our own strength to carry us, we rely on the promises found in Christ Jesus.

While I know the temptation to worry will come again and again each day, I thank God for the moment He showed me his best prescription for it. Because no matter way the day holds, his promise remains.

Dear God, thank You for the power that is found in Your Word and the gift of prayer. When life is overwhelming, help me to remember the promises found in Scripture. Help me to realize that when I pray, I am bringing my cares before the One who cares perfectly. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I have experienced those times when the devotion was a preparatory one beyond my knowledge. Praise God for his word. Praise God your mother is doing well and functioning well enough to play a hymn. My God is awesome!

Isn’t it amazing how God prepares us? I’ve often thougt how the investment of getting into God’s Word (and like you said, getting God’s Word in my heart) pays off in those unexpected crises.

    Dear Abby

Thank you for your message on ‘This is how we stop worrying’. It has come at a much needed time in my life, and just to confirm once again what God has been telling me (over and over again). Your account of your concern for and worrying about your Mom, really touched me. I’m so happy I came across your website.

The past 3 years since our daughter was murdered has been very difficult. The trial is still ongoing and will resume on 27 August. I am concerned about the outcome of the trial, but the Holy Spirit confirms with my spirit that God is in control and already knows the outcome.

On the days we go to court I pray for God to stand beside the judge, for Jesus to be our advocate and the Holy Spirit to guide the proceedings, which gives me much needed peace. Of course, there are times I want to run ahead of God, then He gently tugs me back again and reminds me of His scriptures:

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

My husband and I look after our 2 grandsons, 20 and 27 years old (the latter is cerebral palsied and in a wheelchair, but fully coherent and tech savvy.

My human nature asks why, when and how? But God constantly gives me the assurance that He will undertake in our lives if we just trust Him !

I believe with all my heart God’s promise in His Word: Jeremiah 29v11.

Thank you for listening and may God bless and keep you and your family.

    Kind regards

Pam, I read this last week and I apologize that I didn’t get a chance to respond until now. I can’t imagine the pain and trauma you’ve been through but I can promise to pray over you and your family. I pray that God’s truth will come to Light and others will see it. He is the Ultimate Judge and we can trust his justice will prevail, even when it looks like evil is winning. Thank you for stopping here and sharing some of your story. Love and prayers to you.

Instagram post 18079945318180821 You wouldn’t know it if you didn’t pay attention, but this kid is super hard on himself. He spent twenty minutes trying to find a quiet place to practice his kata last night, but that can be difficult in this house. 😂 He kept at it though. His eight-year-old determination inspires me. It reminds me I can push through those endless distractions too.

I’m reminded of Nehemiah’s words when he rebuilt the wall around Jerusalem:
“I am doing a great work and cannot come down.” Neh. 6:3

Keep your focus on the work God called you to, friends. When you do, he will ensure it flourishes in beautiful ways.

Instagram post 17928538210341735 When we reach that middle ground between the pursuit of a goal or dream and its realization, it’s easy to get discouraged. The newness of beginning is gone, and we may not see the outcome we anticipated. At least, not yet. We may wonder if we’ll ever get there.
-
It’s at this point we must make a choice. We must remember the flame God gave us at the start, and trust he’ll bring fire once again. -
The middle ground is not a place where God abandons us or leaves us to trek up the mountain alone. In fact, it’s where he does some of his most beautiful work.

Instagram post 17850388621734900 I almost had a panic attack over the weekend because our Christmas tree isn’t up yet. I’m not even lying. We started a tradition nine years ago of getting a live tree, and each year my husband and I argue about which weekend we’ll go to the tree farm.
🎄
While I love the warmth of a beautiful, lit tree, I’m also reminding myself: this is not a race. When we hear the constant question, “Are you ready for Christmas” it can feel that way, can’t it? 🎄
If you’re feeling the holiday stress today, let me encourage you with this truth: the most important thing you can ready is your heart. Prepare room. Prepare your soul. He wants to come sit with you.
🎄

While my tree may not be up yet, I’m enjoying this lovely @normanrockwellofficial display this afternoon. And right now, that is enough.
