All I wanted was five minutes.
Five minutes of peace and quiet. Five minutes without poop jokes, Mario World strategies, or another request for a snack.
I thrive on moments of quiet. My fuel comes from little pockets of time nestled throughout the day. A few minutes to process my thoughts, pray, and seek God. And most days, I am intentional about getting those precious minutes. Whether it’s before I wake the kids up or later in the afternoon when the little one is napping, I know it’s crucial.
But today wasn’t one of those days.
There was another school cancellation for snow that never arrived, and my calm state was eroding. Fast.
When I sent the boys outside to play in the invisible snow, I heard them yelling like someone was dying. At one point looked out the window to make sure they both were still alive and found them fighting over the huge, $2 Walmart ball.
God, help me to mother these children well. Help me to extend grace in the moments I want to snap.
This was the prayer I prayed the day before, while brushing my teeth. A little pocket of quiet nestled in my day.
And I’m sure that prayer was what helped me keep my cool as I listened to my kids scream. But I needed another moment. I was desperate for God’s peace in the crazy.
On days when I’m busy taking care of littles, running errands and trying to meet writing deadlines, the stress and chaos of life can overwhelm. And the busier I get, the more difficult it becomes to connect with God or hear from him. Perhaps you’ve been there?
Do you ever struggle to connect with God in the everyday stresses of life? When you feel like you’re constantly running around, trying to get each item checked off your to-do list, do you long for peace and calm?
I know I do. I long to feel God’s presence daily. But is there a secret formula for doing so?
I know what it’s like to juggle family, work and ministry, sometimes it’s a stretch to get a meal on the table, let alone enjoying a moment of silence or reading our Bibles.
We all know that seeking God calms our anxiety and brings us peace, but how do we do this in our busy lives?
I was thrilled when my friend and colleague, Laney Houser invited me to speak on her interview series around the topic of busy. As a pastor, speaker and writer she sees women struggle with this every day, so the topic is near and dear to her heart. This series was born from her own longing to learn how other busy, influential Christian women seek God during different seasons in their life.
