When "I'll Pray for You" Is An Insult

September 27, 2016 by Abby McDonald

when-%22ill-pray-for-you%22-is-an-insult

Sometimes words said with good intention can be insulting. We live in a world where it’s easier than ever to comment on a friend or family member’s trials, triumphs, and everything in-between. But do we stop to think before we insert our like, love, or laughing face?

I will be the first to say I love emojis and use them often in texts and on social media, but I often wonder what all this instant, no-thought-required communication is really doing to our ability to communicate. Take, for example, the statement, “I’ll pray for you.” Or the comment I see more often, “Thoughts and prayers!”

Now, by no means am I saying we shouldn’t pray for others. Sometimes, as I stated in my previous post, it’s all we can do. And let them know you’re praying. It can encourage a person’s heart to know there are people rallying behind them in prayer.

But what if there is something else we can do? What about the times when someone desperately needs help, and we could be the ones God uses to provide it?

There are times when I see people on Facebook crying out for help. Sometimes, it’s a home that’s flooded and they need a place to stay. Or they’re sick and could really use a hot meal. The possibilities are endless.

If we have the resources and ability to help the person in need, are we really displaying the love of Christ by saying “I’ll pray for you,” and then carrying on with our lives? While I’m certain God is all-powerful and able to swoop down, make the person some soup and deliver it to their front door, do you think maybe that’s what he’s called us to do instead?

when-to-stop-praying-and-act

When Jesus walked the earth during his earthly ministry, he prayed. A lot. He and the Father were in constant communion and he often removed himself from others completely so he could be alone in prayer.

But I don’t recall a single time when someone walked up to him, begging for help, food or shelter, and he said, “I’ll pray for you.” He knew there was a time to pray and a time to act, and he wasn’t going to mislead others by confusing the two.

John, who was with Jesus during most of his ministry, says it like this:

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 John 3:18 NIV

Friends, prayer was never intended to be used as an excuse for inaction. And I am convicted. I am guilty of turning the other way when I know God was asking me lend a helping hand, but he is showing me that if we are to be his hands and feet, we must act. We must move. We must do something other than say, “I’ll pray for you.”

I know there are seasons when we are stretched thin between little ones, jobs and other responsibilities. Prayer may truly be the best we have to offer. I know there are also times when we aren’t the best person to help.

But if we are constantly turning the other way, we need to reevaluate. We need to take a long hard look at ourselves and ask the question every person who attended VBS as a kid knows: What would Jesus do?

I can guarantee you, he would do more than sit. Let’s follow his example and do the same.

    Abby,
Great thought provoking post. “I’ll pray for you” is often taking the easy road out – especially when we can actually do something more to help. You’ve got me thinking…
    Blessings,
    Bev

Good to see you here today, Bev. I have to say, when I think of people who actively help others, you come to mind. <3 You are an inspiration, friend.

So true Abby, and commitment to offer help when needed doesn’t go unnoticed. During a recent trial, it meant so much to me when a friend called and asked if she could come to the hospital, or bring food to the house. I will always remember her offer to help in our time of need:) Great thoughts to ponder today my friend.

Yes, it’s amazing how much love a hot meal can convey during a time of need. I experienced that after delivering our youngest son. Such a blessing. Thank you for sharing, Kristine.

What a great and challenging post, Abby! You are so right. Even when we are face to face, it is so easy to say “I’ll pray for you” and then not do it. Which is why I have tried to say “Can I pray for you now?” instead, when meeting people or at church. But it is still so easy to say on social media that I’m praying for someone and happily carry out my day without actually doing it. I am convinced Jesus would never say those words without actually praying, so we should do just the same! Blessings to you!

“Prayer was never intended to be used as an excuse for inaction.” I totally agree. We can use it as a cop-out, to make us not look as bad or feel as bad. Of course there are times when prayer is our only option, but it’s best when combined with hands-on action too. Thanks for sharing this, Abby.

Abby, I got your contact from your admiring brother, Daniel Breter, here in Columbia at ASGDC where I am religious volunteer on Sundays. Just a passing word to a home schooling mom, I think Daniel said? And fellow FB and blogger. Inmates need strong support groups to stand with them. I like your blog. Press on in the Lord, sister. Great practical encouragement, Abby. I know that in this busy and hurried world, we can often forget the need for tangible service. I’m not one to call out for help, but when I have a need I know how blessed I am when others take the initiative to bring a meal, or pick up my son from school, or just visit. You’ve reminded me today of the great value in those actions. Always blessed, friend. xoxo

I forget that each step is filled with opportunity to grow and to become more fully alive. But if there’s anything 2020 taught me, it’s this: Reaching a goal is not the end. It’s just the beginning of something new.

God help me to appreciate each chapter.

Several years ago, I heard this word “breakthrou Several years ago, I heard this word “breakthrough” over and over at the start of the new year, and I asked myself why so many of us stay in a state of inertia, even when we attempt to break free from the things holding us back.

After searching the Word, I saw a facet we tend to overlook: Breakthrough starts in the mind. If our thinking is not rooted in truth, we will never gain momentum by changing our physical habits. And while eliminating distractions can serve as a starting point for uncovering the lies we believe, our steps cannot stop there.

So what is one powerful way we can transform our minds? If we dig into Scripture, we see God’s followers turning to one way over and over: praise.

Sharing more about this over at ibelieve.com today.

Not all authors read reviews of their book, and I Not all authors read reviews of their book, and I understand that. It can be more than a little discouraging to read a scathing review. I am one of those authors who does read them, because sometimes I need a small glimpse of what God is doing. A little push to keep going. This review on Amazon made me tear up when I read it, because this is why I write. If it weren’t for things like this, I would’ve quit a long time ago.

If you’ve read Shift, please consider leaving an honest review. Why? Well, for one thing, I’m nearing one of those magic numbers on Amazon: 100. I don’t think fireworks will go off or anything when I reach it, but it does help with Amazon’s algorithms. This means more people will see the book when they’re shopping in the “you may also like” section, etc. And another person may be reached by God in ways only he can reach them, like he did here.

Thank you so much. 💗

P.S. You do not have to have purchased from Amazon to leave an Amazon review.

This is me. An unremarkable photo after something This is me. An unremarkable photo after something I had to psyche myself up for an hour to do: thirty minutes of intense cardio. Back in January, I said yes to a life change I haven’t done, well, ever. I started working out five days a week, I eliminated processed foods, and replaced my love for potato chips with fruit and veggies.

(Well, actually that’s not true, but I tell myself it is as I’m eating the healthy stuff. 😉)

My point of all this is not to tell you I lost twenty pounds or even ten, because I haven’t. It’s not to sell you anything either, because I’m not. My point is to tell you this: Keep going, even when you don’t think it’s making a difference.

When I didn’t see immediate results, I was tempted to give up. But with each choice to show up, I see progress. More energy. Less recovery time and breathlessness. Even after three weeks, I feel different, because my body and mind are changing.

Whenever we start something new, there’s usually a dip. That period where we don’t see the change we want, so we throw in the towel. But nothing in life worth having comes easy. So keep pressing play. Keep making the choice to move awkwardly through the discomfort.

Because one day you’ll wake up and realize you’re not the same.

When he gave the greatest commandment, he didn’t use qualifiers. I’m so glad he created a world that is diverse and not monotone. It’s so much more beautiful and interesting than a one note, one tone creation.

Seven years ago, I purchased this guide at a write Seven years ago, I purchased this guide at a writer’s conference. It was part of my commitment to write regularly, and after hearing Jerry Jenkins speak, I knew I wanted him to sign it.

He didn’t know me from Adam’s cat, so he couldn’t have known how much I would need the truth woven into the penned scripture reference:

“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!"

But God knew.

More times than I can count, God has spoken to me through the right word at the right time or a simple gesture. The beauty of it is that he uses ordinary people like you and me to do it. All it requires is for us to follow a little nudge, and we can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

Who is God calling you to encourage today?

ONE YEAR BOOK BIRTHDAY REFLECTIONS More often tha ONE YEAR BOOK BIRTHDAY REFLECTIONS

More often than I can count, it’s my kids who remind me how an intentional perspective shift can change the way I live. It can alter the way I approach circumstances that make me want to groan and throw up my hands (insert the entire year of 2020). They are God’s little messengers in the middle of my stubbornness, and remind me of his promises. It will be okay, even if tomorrow doesn’t look the way I want.

It turns out, I wrote an entire book about shifting and I didn’t even realize how much I would need it. Today is its one year birthday.

Months before its release, 2020 approached and I had a grand vision for how the year would go. In my mind, I saw in-person conferences and events, hugs with those who supported the journey, and some travel here and there. Of course, March rolled around and the year took a complete 180 from what I saw in my head.

God called me to shift my perspective in a way I never foresaw, and in a way I quite frankly didn’t want to.

But doing so changed me.
